Proceeding with caution

For the last couple of years I've admired this barn from afar.  Wanting so badly to take some pictures.  One of the things you learn about country folks is some are friendly and some are not.  Walking onto someones property and taking pictures could land you in a heap of trouble.  Buck shot in my keester just doesn't seem worth a couple of pictures.  All I could do was wait, looking for signs of life everytime I passed.  If you can catch the owners outside it's easier to size them up.  Finally after two years I see someone picking up sticks in the yard.  She looks normal and doesn't have a gun, so I take my chances....
Turns out that Randy and Carol Whitaker were just as excited to see me as I was them.  Introducing myself first to Randy.  Of course country ladies always let the man handle strangers.  When telling him why I had stopped he grinned and said this will make Carols day.  She and I hit off immediately, such a friendly lady.  All these years I had assumed she'd be a quilter.  Goes to show you, never assume anything.  Carol has never made a quilt but she collects antique quilts, and hopes to someday make one.  She painted this impressive Labyrinth quilt block from a picture found online.  Carol's a quilter at heart she just doesn't know it yet!  I couldn't think of a better way to end my birthday than to finally get some pictures and talk to the maker of something I've admired for years.

  1. Glad you survived! Sounds like you have a new friend that you can coerce, er encourage to join our group of fabric addicts. Knowing your powers of persuasion, I hope she has a spare room for fabric storage! XO

  6. That barn makes a beautiful picture by itself; the quilt block just makes it perfect! I actually didn't see the block until I saw the close-up. The color is so rich and the shape is so interesting. What fun to meet a potential quilter and friend, too.

  7. She did a great job on her barn quilt! I am very impressed with it. It's hard to believe that she's not a quilter. But, at least she's a quilt collector. I can wait to see the first quilt you show her how to do! Happy belated birthday!
