Little by Little

My goodness it seems like forever since I last posted.  Life in Podunk is just a whirlwind of things to be done.  It occurred to me yesterday I'm in serious need of a slow down, regrouping, a day ahead plan.  In my efforts to accomplish so much I'm actually accomplishing less.  I'll add "list making" to the list of
to-do's!  It's a big vicious circle isn't it!
So here's the design wall.  The applique is finished, all that needs to be done is to finishing piecing the blocks.  The blocks on the wall are pieced....

...but I've a stack that's been waiting for what seems like forever.

The plan for the quilt was a complicated border, but at this point I'm thinking of simplifying it just so I can call it done.  Last night I managed to sew a partial block before running out of bobbin thread.

This little bobbin holding tree was full of bobbins with different colors and thread weights.  I've been using the partial bobbins for piecing quilts.  Well I've finally used up all the oddballs and need to wind more bobbins.  Yeah!  or so I thought.  THE BOBBIN WINDER  IS BROKEN!  GRRRRR!  This machine was serviced two months ago.  Oh it spins, then stops after about 3 or 4 rotations.  Filling these two white bobbins took about 15 minutes.   Most of that time was me trying to figure out how to make it work, and I did.

Where there's a will, there's a way.  A little spring  needed a little help.  I'm sure my machine service man would cringe if he sees me doing this, but a gal's gotta do whatever gets the job done.  I know the lady at the shop reads my blog occasionally, lets hope she keeps this one to herself.  Now do I take it back in to the shop, or keep doing this,  or do I go buy another stand alone bobbin winder?  I had a stand alone winder, never used it because my machine winder worked so well.  So I gave it to a friend.
Well it looks like this will need to be my standard operating procedure.   There's far more important things to worry about and get done.  A trip into town for servicing or a bobbin winder isn't on the top of my to-do list
(that still needs to be made).

For me live is more relaxing without a to do list.
Sewing is not always relaxing. I know because my machine has his moods too!!!!!

  3. Oh, my - that is just gorgeous! I would have to stop everything and finish this one. Lists - I have lists, but then my 'mood' takes over and 3 more things get started.

  6. That quilt is going to be fabulous. I love your bobbin winder fix. As long as it works. ;) I was at a retreat one time when my friend was going through bobbins like crazy and wasn't sewing any more that I was. She didn't know she could adjust that stopper thing so her bobbins would fill up.Full bobbins make for happy sewers.

  8. Lea Anne, you make me laugh -- "add listmaking to the to-do list." I think your quilt looks really beautiful, and it deserves the complicated border that you originally had in mind. Why not just set it aside once you get the blocks done and give yourself a quickie project to get that instant gratification and get your creative mojo recharged? I know how it is to spend so much time working on the blocks that you just want it to be DONE already -- but your blocks are so beautiful, and with fancy borders they would make for a truly stunning finished quilt. You clearly have put a lot of thought and effort into careful fabric selections, piecing and applique.

  9. I struggled with the bobbin winder on my old machine for a long time. I had it repaired and it only lasted a few weeks, so I hand wound my bobbins for a couple of years and finally broke down and bought a new machine. This was before the little bobbin winders were available. I feel your pain!

  10. Your design wall is fab, as always. I'll bet if the machine was just serviced, they'd adjust it at no cost, since you haven't used the winder since then. Country girls will find a way to get r done. :)

  11. I discovered your blog few weeks ago, when I saw a picture of your Tulip Quilt (I don't remember if it was in Pinterest or another social media). I was impressed and fell in love immediately... oh, that beautiful curved gingham borders with the yo-yos! I remember I thought: There can not be a prettier quilt. But now I visit you blog regularly and... girl, each one of your projects is still better! I admire your work, you are so talented choosing and mixing colors, and your piecing is simply perfect. Your entries always makes me smile, also. Thank you very much for sharing.

  16. I finally bought a bobbin winder to use on my vintage machines, it is easier then winding them on the vintage machines. I love your spool holder. Your blocks are gorgeous!

  17. quilt looking beautiful, I feel it does not need a fancy border, it will detract from your applique.
What a blow the bobbin winder not cooperating, I have seen the seperate winders but have not got one myself.

  18. I love the quilt and the colors! Good job on the DIY repair. ;)

  19. wonderful quilt coming along. Perhaps the bobbin winder is a quick adjustment and would be under some sort of guarantee from just being serviced. The worse you'll hear is no or it will cost XXX. Worth the trip to find out.

  20. Your quilt is gorgeous! I am truly inspired with your blocks, both pieced and appliqued. The fabric choices are beautiful. Have a great time finishing this quilt, no matter how you decide to finish it. It deserves a honorary blue ribbon. Sorry about your bobbin winder. I have two machines that are not working properly. Time and Money prevent a trip to the service man, hopefully soon. Until then, my father let me use his sewing machine. Have a wonderful day!

  21. Your quilt is so beautiful, it will look fantastic when finished! I really, really like those appliqué blocks. And yes, a girl has to do whatever needs done to keep on making progress. I would've done the same thing if my bobbin winder acted up. I adore that bobbin tree - I've never seen one before.

  22. Ah that would make me cross! Bobbin winding is no fun at the best of times!

  24. The two block designs in your quilt complement each other really well. That's going to be a wonderful quilt.

  25. That quilt is beautiful.

My machine is an old Singer, but if the lid on top isn't screwed on perfectly straight, it will cause the bobbin winder to take forever. Something doesn't engage right, or something rubs up against it to slow it down. I usually just need to loosen the screw, adjust the top slightly, and screw it down tight. Maybe your issue is something as simple to fix? Winding bobbins is tedious enough when everything goes right!

  26. I just adore these sweet applique blocks and this will be so lovely when it's finished. Hmmm, to go the complicated border or just finish?... I know that dilemma all to well. That's a hard call, but you'll know what to do when you get there.
