Treadling along

I was so excited when mom called and told me to come and get her old treadle.  Its been buried under a pile of junk for over 20 years.  Before that it was in the garage, then used as a plant stand.  Yep the typical vintage sewing machine horror story.  It was such a let down to see this machine after 20 years.  She looks so good from here.  Well for 116 years old, born in 1897.
Most of the decals are still there, and some of the paint is starting to peel.  The shuttle area has some surface rust, but nothing that can't be fixed.  I've not a clue how to properly care for her.  I suppose the first thing to do is give her a drink of oil!  But before I jump in both feet first I'll need to do a little research.
This is the saddest part, its also peeling.  Breaks my heart.  If you have a treasure and you don't take care of it....sigh....it soon becomes junk.  Thankfully I rescued this one before its death.  I think with a little TLC she might be able to pull through.
But for now I'm putting her in safe place where no more harm can be done. OOPS! I almost forgot to show you this.
And when you open it up!  Not sure if it originally came with the machine.  But its the best preserved part of the whole bundle.

  1. That is called a puzzle box and they are very popular! I just wrote a blog post today on how I clean my machines. http://missyscakesandaprons.blogspot.com/2013/09/how-to-clean-treadle.html
It's just an intro and not a complete care guide. You'll find any info you need here: http://treadleon.net/ And if you need the manual you can find that at Singerco.com

  3. This reminds me of my grandmothers Pfaff treadle which still works great to this day.

  5. Your machine is amazing and what a treasure. I was over at Missys Homemaking adventures and she did a tutorial on how to clean the treadle machines. I have one that needs to be cleaned and I was going to follow her tutorial. Hope that helps?

  6. Were you ever able to get your treadle up and running? I seldom use an electric anymore!
