Cake Stand Quilt Blocks

I didn't get as much time at the sewing machine as I had hoped for this weekend.  Between catching up on summertime chores during the intense temperatures and humidity, and enjoying family time over the 4th of July, my energy for other projects was limited.  But I’m grateful to have made at least a little progress on these blocks.

The plan is to keep working on them little by little with the hopes of having this quilt finished by the end of the year.

If I could give one piece of advice to a new quilter it would be....
Finish a quilt before starting another.  No exceptions to this rule...ever!

Years ago I remember reading on a quilting blog .... There are basically three types of quilters.

1.  Quilters who like to collect quilting supplies and rarely start one let alone finish a quilt.
2.  Quilters who start lots of projects but rarely finish them.
3. Quilters who start quilts and finish them before starting another.

She also stated that she felt like the quilters that came to her sew alongs and retreats were #3's and she liked that because she too was a #3.

I think I've been a mixture of all three types but I long for the day that I become a #3.  The chaos of so many unfinished projects is overwhelming at times.

I've been trying for the last 2 or 3 years to get to place where I can be a #3.  I could make it easy on myself and just give away the unfinished projects that I no longer love.  In my mind that's cheating because a #3 starts them and finishes them.

Well all I can do is keep plugging along.  I'm making progress, it's slow going but it's still progress.

This week's plan
by next monday

#2  Make 34 more Cake Stand Blocks

  1. During the winter I can easily piece a quilt flimsy in a month if the pattern is simple enough. However I have several long term foundation paper piecing and applique quilts in progress at the same time. Summer is when those are work on the most, I can foundation paper piece a block or two in a short period of time. Slowly those quilts will be finished. Happy stitching!

  2. I have rediscovered many UFO's in my sewing room the last few days. Most of them I could recognize. Two of them were so lost in my memory I am giving their bits and pieces away. One of them was cuts into tiny pieces that I can only describe as a tiny log cabin project. There was no labeling with it and no pattern. It was only solids and some of them were browns and grey. Ugly. Others I found I want to finish as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the sewing room looks better than it ever has! I need to attach a sign on my computer that reads: No new fabric! Yes, I need to become a #3!

  3. I'm between a #2 and #3. I have a lot of quilts going at once, but I almost always finish them. There have been a couple of times when I've just stopped working on one because I just didn't like it. Thankfully, these are few and far between. You cake stand blocks are so stinking cute!

  4. Your scrappy baskets are so cute. The fabrics are just gorgeous. I still remember your post when you were cutting and cutting and organizing scraps. LOVELY!

  5. Your basket blocks are very pretty. I'm never going to be a #3 type quilter. I like a lot of variety when I'm sewing. I have gotten better at picking a priority project and working on it till it's finished quilt top. I'd be happy if my "active" quilt projects was less than 10. I'm at over double that now.
