Remember these?

I've been shuffling these around the studio for quite some time.  It's time to do something with them.  Either finish them or store them away in a drawer.
The block pattern is called Nostalgic Pillows By Lynn Wilder.  You can find a link to the pattern on her blog Sew'n in Wild Oaks.  Just scroll down on her blog and look to the left.

The little ladies are vintage images found on the internet, then printed to fabric.

Originally I'd planned on making the 9 scrappy blocks.  Now I'm thinking I'd like to finish it as quickly as possible.  You know, UFO Busting!  So the afternoon was spent rummaging through the scrap bins and cutting fabric.

The gingham is the perfect fabric for framing these little cuties.

My favorite is this one with the bright pink gingham.

Playtime

I ran out of background fabric for my Daisy quilt.  Instead of cleaning the studio or catching a few dust bunnies in the house....EQ Playtime!
The pattern is Nostalgic Christmas by Lynn Wilder.  She's an amazing quilter, teacher and designer.   Lynn shares her love of quilting over at Sewn in Wild Oaks  Blog.   I've never seen a quilter that can whip out a hand applique quilt as fast as her.
Below is the quilt I made using the Nostalgic Christmas pattern with vintage Christmas cards printed onto fabric using my printer.
Also a pillow for the spare bedroom.
I've always thought it would look super cute with these cute little vintage girls I've been collecting on Pinterest.
Another idea for this 18 inch block would be to make a quilted calendar holder.  Do you remember those from the 80's?  Great for when you have an ugly calender.
Three blocks was enough to give me a good idea of how it'll look.  You know a quilt pattern will stand the test of time when it so versatile.
Girls I think your looking at my next quilt.  It will knock out a lot of scraps.

Pillow fight!

My husband likes the "man look" in the house.  You know what I'm talking about, deer and fish decor.  So I've tried to accommodate him for the last 3 yrs that we've lived in the same house.  (divorcee's, I gave up my home in town to live in manville, he lived alone for 12 yrs, I lived alone for 5 years) But quite frankly I feel the need for more..lets say softness around the house.  Little by little the man decor is finding its way to the back of the closet and garage.  He laughed when I showed him the pillow saying "See this is how it starts!  One pillow and then before you know it there's pillows all over the house!"    Of course he was just giving me a hard time.  So without further ado the first of many girl pillows!

And the cute little flower detail.

Even though the blues are a little different, I think they'll still go nice little with my Summer Romance quilt.
Shhh...don't tell Ross but while he's at work today I'm making some lace pillows...it's a UFO from 7 years ago when I first bought my embroidery machine.  Back then there was a big plan to make a dining room table cloth out of these, much cheaper to go buy one!  So for the sake of finishing UFO's they are going to make some cute little pillows.  The fabric shown isn't what I'll be using it's just so you can see the lace design.

Personal Growth

It seems that personal growth really means nothing to my ego.  The deal was no more new projects until all the old were were finished, and then and only then could me and my ego start adding to the stash again.  Well I caved...It really couldn't be helped.  You see the spare bedroom needs a girls touch...And well look what I've got stitching in the studio!  100% from my scrap box!  Might add a ruffle to this pillow.
The cute little flowers up there are 3 dimensional .  You can find the tutorial over here at Lynn's blog.   (Just scroll down after you click that link. Oh you can also find a link to the Nostalgic Pillow on her blog)I was going to put some leftover rose buds in the middle, but you know how it goes...you stand back and look at it tilting your head from one side to the other.  If there's a head tilt, more than likely I'll reject an idea. These little guys didn't make the stand back test.

Now there's more to play with but no ideas are popping out, these are the scraps from the double flying geese block in the pillow block.
I spent part of the weekend working on a BOM.  Wouldn't you know it in order to finish I need to go shopping...oh darn...LOL

Nostalgic finish and Baby blues...

Days just seem to fly by.  The studio has been a flurry of loose threads.  And by that I mean I've been pickin and a grinnin!  Yep grinnin, might as well laugh about the pickin of the stitches because crying only makes you feel bad.  Ain't got time for no Baby blues over this little cutie.  So I finished Peggy's baby quilt top, now I'm quilting it, and pickin it.  Twice I've started a border, stood back and thought YUK!  I even did the preview on plastic, and still I pick.  Here's the full shot of the quilt before quilting, I decided to do a flange instead of a scallop.  Now the reason for the pickin is because I wanted to quilt a scallop, it was all down hill from there....

                                          And the lovely picked borders

Now that's not all I've done in the last week.  Finished the Nostalgic quilt, well it still needs a binding. You can find this pattern here.  Or hop over to the designers blog(Lynn Wilder) and give her some quilty love.
Getting good pictures indoors is almost impossible.  So I had to go outside.  Its been between 0 and 20 degrees here for a few days, not worth me going outside for pictures.  At last I caved and froze my tale off to get these.  Not the best of pictures but ITS COLD OUT THERE!
Tried to get a shot as soon as I walked out the door...not real good...
...try a different angle maybe that will get the quilting...not good....
Okay I'll go out in the yard just for you here in blogland!

Making progress

Theres been a little progress on Nostalgic Christmas.  As hard as I tried not to I had to steal a couple of ideas from Lynn.  You can take a look at her version here Lots of SITD!  But the most wonderful thing is no thread change!  Its all the same color.  This is quite possibly my favorite quilt.  Even though it's a christmas quilt I think I'll still hang it in my sewing studio for awhile, maybe put on the bed in the spare bedroom.

Nostalgic Christmas Quilting

I've spent the last two days marking this quilt before putting it on the frame.  Making  sure that the design I choose was going to fit.  The quilt top has been finished for weeks and waiting to be quilted.  Rarely do I work with a pattern for a quilt, most of the time I design my own on paper or in EQ7.  But when I saw this pattern Nostalgic Christmas by Lynn Wilder(why does my mind see her on the set of Little House on the Prairie?)  it was a must have.  But...and there's always a but...When I seen hers finished I couldn't get the quilting out of my head.  Her quilting was gorgeous, well my brain, as nutty as it is in there, wouldn't let me see any other designs for the quilt, so I had to lay it aside until that passed.  Finally!  I had an inspiration other than Lynns.

In between quilting and cleaning there's been a chase going on around here.  Me chasing this Blue Jay with the camera.  He's a bit camera shy and spooks very easy.  What a lovely bird, these pictures don't due him justice.   Well if I were that pretty I'd strike a pose every time a camera came near me!   The ultimate pose would be with his wings spread in flight.

Maybe I should go incognito, by cutting a hole in a white sheet and lay in the snow beneath the pine tree.

I could build an igloo with one small window...

This next picture made me laugh.  The huge bird in the upper left corner looks like he's setting in the pine tree but he's actually in the smoke tree closest to the house.  Giving the optical illusion that we have Monster Chickadees in Podunk!....LOL!

No scraps left behind

The  last quilt (Nostalgic Christmas)  had oodles of double flying geese units.  Realizing after the first block that the scraps from these could be used to make an AAQI quilt.  So I started using the "wings" that were cut off as leaders when sewing the blocks, and then  an EPIPHANY!   Draw another line and sew it before cutting!  NO need to make them leaders!  Hoping that my pictures make sense.   So here's what the pattern called for, one straight line down the middle and sew on that line then cut it off leaving a 1/4 inch seam.

                                                         Adding another sewing line
 Sew on both lines
 Cut in between
Press open

Clip that birdies wings

The picture larger so you could see the ruler...now can I get these sewn together without pulling out my hair!

Nostalgic Quilt top finish

Well here she is!  This has to be one of my favorite quilts this year.  Can't wait to get it on the frame and start quilting.  The pattern called for the final border to be red but I didn't have one red piece in my stash that matched that was big enough.  So its green and very hard to see in this picture that I took the picture at 8am outside and frost still on the ground...BRRRR!  It was too darn cold to worry about how wavy and wonky it looks so just imagine it not.  Giving Lynn a BIG ole country huggins for the pattern!

Close ups of all the blocks

This one below is my favorite block, it seems to just jump off the quilt.

Until next time, Quilt out of your comfort zone!
