Charity Quilt #7

Who doesn't love blue and yellow?  It's one of my favorite combinations.  The wilder prints in this quilt are more fabrics that were to be used for making Vera Bradley style hand bags.

The rest of the fabrics were pulled from the stash to help slow down those wild prints.

The backing was also pulled from my stash.  I love this cute daisy print and have been holding onto it for over 10 yrs.  Just waiting on the right quilt pattern or quilt needing a backing.  It was hard to let her go but it's time for her to be used and loved by someone other than me.

It's getting a little harder to make the franken batting due to the smaller pieces of batting.  I'm guessing  there's about three more quilts worth of scrap batting.

The shelter receiving these quilts typically start needing more quilts around the first of November.  So my plan is to deliver the completed quilts by the first week of October.

Until next time...

I hope you find time to stitch up something sweet!

Charity Quilt #6 2023

All of the fabrics in this quilt(front and back) were purchased at Walmart years ago when they decided to get rid of their fabric departments.  At $2 a yard I couldn't pass up even the ugliest of fabrics.

Back in those days I was a single mom working 10 to 12 hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week.  The quilts I made were commissioned or gifts.  It would take about 2 to 4 months to make a quilt in my spare time.

During this time is when I started building my fabric stash with the hopes of the commissioned quilts being made from my stash.  But it never happened that way.   I also never made quilts for me.  Even the small wall hangings I made to decorate my home were gifted to others.   It was many years into my quilting journey before I made and kept a quilt for myself.

The journey has come full circle and once again every quilt  is being gifted.  Well, at least for the next few weeks.  I'm getting the itch to make a new Christmas quilt for my bed. Something simple, maybe a red and white quilt with lots of  white space for quilting.  And I'm hoping to make the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt this fall.   Only time will tell, you all know me....the plan is always changing.

Until next time...

I hope you find time to stitch up something sweet!

Charity Quilt #5 2023

After many comments saying my ugly charity quilts are not ugly I decided maybe I should look for a different charity for these quilts.  With a quick internet search I found a shelter in Indy that houses homeless women with children.  This shelter gives them a place to live and provides resources for rebuilding their lives.

The added bonus for me is I won't need to drive as far to deliver them.  And we won't need to go into the not so safe part of the city.  We can drop them off at one of there donation drop boxes.  Mr. Podunk will still be going with me for safety reasons.

It's nice to know the quilts might survive longer than a few weeks and provide comfort to those looking to better their situations.

I'll keep making them for the next two weeks.  Then take a short break for a week or two before starting back on the charity quilts.  My plan is to make the first delivery of charity quilts sometime in October when the weather starts turning colder.  The charity says November 1st is when they start seeing a need for more blankets and cold weather items.  As long as I have franken batting and no so loved fabric I'll keep making them.

The scraps from these quilts are piling up fast.  I think the quilt made from the scraps will fit the guideline of an ugly homeless quilt.  I'm on a mission to make a quilt that you all will find to be absolutely ugly.

Until next time...

I hope you find time to stitch up something sweet!

Charity Quilt #4 2023

Oh my this is a bright one!  A few years ago I went crazy buying yellow fabrics.  Everyone was making yellow and gray or yellow and black quilts.  Some how I was pulled into the frenzy and made one quilt top in this colorway.  It still needs to be quilted.  This charity quilt is the same as the others, just large squares sewn together and minimal quilting.  The binding was made from the scraps.

She's a bright one that's for sure.  I Wouldn't exactly call her ugly either.

A few of these prints are from my days of making Vera Bradley style purses.  Does Vera still make handbags?  There's a internet rabbit hole for me to go down later today!  If she does I'm sure I'll spend way to much time looking around the website.

The backing is a navy blue sheet.  Why?  Someone gave it to me years ago and it's the right size today.

It's not my best quilting job and I used the same pink thread as I did on the other three charity quilts.  I'll keep using the pink thread for all the charity quilts. These quilts are supposed to be ugly so  don't worry about thread color. Now I need to stop worrying about the fabrics matching.  It would make the process go much quicker.  I've even been worrying about the same prints being next to one another.  Oh well, someone might get a quilt they love because it's somewhat pretty.

Until next time...

I hope you find time to stitch up something sweet!

Charity Quilt #3 ~ Kaffe Fassett

This quilt is wild!  I'm not a fan of Kaffe Fasset but I must admit his fabrics are very eye catching.

To really appreciate the color we need to get a little closer.

This was a fat quarter bundle.  In order to have enough squares for the quilt I had to piece some of the squares.  I think it added a nice interest to the quilt.

The backing is a 1990's print I purchased from an estate sale many years ago.

The binding is scraps from the this quilt top and the scraps from the previous charity quilts.

I'm doing my best to use every last piece of the fabric used in these ugly homeless charity quilts.

Until next time...

I hope you find time to stitch up something sweet!

Charity Quilt #2 Finished

Hi Quilty Friends!  Can you believe it?  Another charity(homeless) quilt finished!  It's exciting to see these quilts coming together so fast.

Quilters eye candy they are not and for that I'm happy.  Following the rules set for the specific charity insures they will get to where they need to go and serve their intended purpose.

The theme for this quilt was dark background florals. Some of these are vintage calicos I loved but knew I would never use.  It was time to let them go so they could do what they were meant to do.  Keep someone warm and be loved, even if only for a short time.

Scrappy makes me happy even when it's not in my favorite color pallet.  This scrappy binding put a smile on my face.  So  much color.

Now it's time to start the next one.  I'm on a roll and can't stop.  Let's see how many I can do before needing a break.  Can I keep it up until I run out of franken batting?  Wish me luck!

Until next time...

I hope you find time to stitch up something sweet!

Friday Finish ~ Charity Quilt #1

Hi Quilty Friends!  The first charity quilt is finished.  This quilt was made using partial layer cakes and a few cuts from my stash.  It's probably the quickest quilt I've ever made.  Literally a quilt in a day but I spread it out over 3 days.

Piecing the top took about an hour and a half.  Piecing the backing, about 30 minutes.  The franken-batting about 30 minutes.  The X quilting went really fast too, about an hour and half.

The machine applied binding was made using the scraps from the backing.

About another hour to cut and attach it to the quilt.

The quilt still needs to be washed but that can wait until I'm ready to deliver all of them to the homeless shelter.  Now it's time to pull fabric for the next one.  Below is the fabric I've set aside for making more.  There's a couple quilt panels and almost finished quilt tops hiding in here that would make for quick finishes as well.

Until next time...

I hope you find time to stitch up something sweet!
