Starbound Quilt Top

I started making this quilt from a picture I saved on Pinterest.  The picture had no information. Finding quilt pattern names is almost impossible these days due to algorithms that are supposed to make things easier.  I think it has made things worse.  I'm pretty sure he who pays the most gets pushed to the top of the search. Using all the key words I could think of I searched Google, DuckDuckGo, Pinterest, Bing, Instagram, and Facebook. I even did a reverse image search.  Thankfully my aging brain can still work things out with a little time.  I knew I had seen this quilt before, but where?  Since it is a simple quilt, it was easy to recreate without a pattern while my brain worked in the background to find the quilt pattern in its corrupted files.

'
Using quilt logic, and assuming it was either a charm pack or layer cake pattern I started pulling fabrics from the scrap bins. When it came time to make the stars, I was running low on larger scraps, so I had to make the stars with no inner points.

Because I like BIG quilts, I added two more borders.  The red was cut from yardage, and the final star border was cut from leftover wide backing fabric.

Choosing the backing fabric was time consuming. I wanted a low volume print or more than one low volume, but this was the best my stash had to offer.   The large floral is Pioneer Woman fabric from Walmart and the navy-blue dot is an older Riley Blake print.

For the binding I chose a navy-blue gingham only because it was my first plan for the outer border.  After fussy cutting it and laying it on the floor with the quilt top, I didn't like how it looked.  So, it was fussy cut(again) into narrow strips. The gingham was carefully matched. When sewn together it looks like one continuous piece of fabric. Can you see the seam?

For now, this quilt will be put into the "needs to be quilted" drawer because I have a quilt on the frame waiting to be finished.  Who knows when this will be quilted because squirrelly is my quilty life.  So, when the time comes to put her on the frame I'll make the quilt label.

About four days into working on this quilt I found the pattern!  My old brain thought it looked like a Primrose Cottage design.   Their designs are typically beginner friendly small square quilts.  The search was simple, start with page one of the quilt patterns and keep going until I found it or came to the end of the patterns.  It was at the bottom of page one!   Click image to go to the pattern.  Of course, I went back to Pinterest and added the name of the pattern in the comments of the pinned picture.

~ Best of 2018, Part 3 ~

For the final day of the Best of 2018 I'll be choosing posts that meant the most to me.   Notice I said important and not favorite posts.  A lot has happened over the year but there were a few key moments that stuck with me for one reason or another.  In the last 2 Best of 2018 posts I listed them in order of views or comments.  There is no possible way for me to list these in any order.  Each one is special in its own right.

This was a huge moment for me and my quilt pattern sales.  Learning to publish patterns has been quite the adventure.  To actually have them in print was overwhelming to say the least.  When I started quilting years ago I never dreamed I would someday design and publish my own patterns.  It's been a gradual process fueled by the people in my life.   Some of those people were you, my followers, wanting patterns of quilts I would make.  A big ole THANK YOU to all of  you that believe in and support me on daily basis.  I love quilting  and I love sharing the love of quilting.  I'm looking forward to new quilt adventures with all of you in the years to come.  So this is where I start plugging my pattern shop on Etsy.  Click here to see all my patterns

Turnabout Tulips, 4-13-18.
This quilt was released on a very important date to me.  Not all dates that are important are good.  In hindsight I wish I had waited another week to release the pattern.  It really is a great quilt with a fun layout with lots of room for quilting.  I also feel like the colors I chose where not the right ones to make her shine.  Maybe someday I could make another with brighter colors.

Who doesn't just love a quick and easy quilt?  Add patriotic to the mix and you have FUN!  This was a marathon quilt from the word GO.  I was looking for something quick, fun and bright to get me out of a blah blah blah mood.  I had so much fun following someone else directions.  From start to finish it took less than 5 days!  It gave me a much needed boost of quilting mojo!

This post was all about my first quilt designed with fabric that hadn't even hit the market.  It was a blast!  A quilters dream!  But boy does it put the pressure on a gal when she is used to working at her own pace and sharing the progress as she darn well pleases.  Cindy Cloward at Riley Blake fabrics has no idea how happy it made me to work with the Autumn Love fabric.  She made this a summer to remember for years to come. The pattern for Autumn Memories can be found in my Etsy shop by clicking here.

Trunk Show, 8-11-18
I had no idea when I started publishing patterns that so many quilters would want to see the quilts up close and personal.  Quilt guilds started contacting me almost immediately.  I wasn't ready!   I had no idea what to do at a trunk show.  But after a few months of turning down invitations I decided to jump in with both feet and do it.  I learned a lot from this first show and I'm looking forward to many more to come.

***Patriotic Picnic and PDF SALE!***

Hey! Happy Quilters!  I'm so excited to finally share this quilt.  It was one of those quilts designed a few years ago with no intentions of writing a pattern.  But after several request for a pattern....here it is, all 95 inches of Patriotic Picnic!

The name came about because of the red gingham in the quilt.  Perfect for those summer holidays.  Yes, I can imagine me sitting on this with a picnic basket full goodies as Mr. Podunk and I OOH and AHH at a colorful display of fireworks, while sipping on a sweet glass of Strawberry Lemonade.  Speaking of Mr. Podunk, he rarely says anything about my quilts.  But while helping with the photo shoot of this quilt he said "this is a nice quilt, can I have it?"  UMM...how do you tell your sweetie absolutely not, I love it too?  You don't.  My quick thinking swooped in and promptly told him he needed to adjust his end of the quilt...shew that was a close one!

Don't let the name of this quilt fool you.  It looks great in every colorway.  Here's a few EQ drawings for inspiration.

I'm loving this blue and yellow!  Another quilt might be in my future.  With these over sized blocks the quilt comes together quickly.  Hmmm...what about a Christmas version in red, green with a little gold.

It's a perfect quilt for using up scraps.  This 95" x 95" monster would make a big dent in the scrap bins.  Are you digging through those scraps?  Well let me tempt you a little more.

From now until Monday May 21, 2018, this pattern as well as all my other PDF quilt patterns are  20% off in my Etsy shop.  I've changed the prices instead of using a discount code.  It makes it so much easier for you.  The price you see is the price you pay.   You can also purchase most of my patterns as a mailed pattern.  The best thing about the mailed pattern for this quilt is the large applique placement sheet, it's one large piece of paper.  No taping or gluing paper together.  Both versions of the pattern include a quilt coloring page and the separate applique templates sheet.  The template sheet is great for fusible applique.  You can print it from your computer onto the fusible webbing sheet or freezer paper if you choose to do turned edge applique.

Well it's time to put this big beauty to good use in my guest bedroom.  Sorry Mr. Podunk!
