Flying Free Mini Quilt ~ FREE

I'm flying high after finishing the Flying Free Circle Mini Quilt.  I'm feeling like I could make 10 more of these little cuties!

The Flying Free pattern was designed for turned edge applique, but I decided quick and easy raw edge applique suited my needs better.  So, I had to trace some of the applique from the backside of the printout.

My applique looks pretty good until you take up close pictures, but I wanted you to see the tiny little blanket stitch.  It looks like a mess when this close but honestly it looks pretty normal when at a normal distance.

For the quilting and applique on this one I decided to use the thread I normally use when quilting on the longarm.  Superior Threads MicroQuilter 7002.  It's100wt polyester and melts into most fabrics.

If you're interested in making this little mini quilt, there's some things you need to know.  First, I had to reduce the size of the applique to 60%.  It took many trials and errors before finding the perfect size to fit the 10" circle needed for my project.  I also opted to print only the print the pages I thought were needed, which was pages 6-9.  However, after printing them, it dawned on me, I didn't need pages 8 and 9.  They were the templates for the hat and flag.  Both of these could be traced from pages 6 and 7.

Opening the Mystery Boxes

 Hey Quilty Friends!  Today we're finally going to dig into those mystery boxes.  I thought one of them held my very small stash of Home Dec fabric but I was wrong. 

So let's start with the one on the bottom first.  It's hiding something super cute.

As soon as I opened it I remembered it and wanted to start working on it again.

I designed this one a few years ago. 

I'm pretty sure everything I need to finish the quilt top is in the box.  Let's find out!

The test block is the only block that is completely finished.

Several partial blocks, lacking only the flower and stars.

Three blocks still needing all the applique.

Oodles of arcs for the rest of the quilt.

A few scraps because I over cut.  But maybe they can be worked into the design. 

All the fabric is here.  I might have included the backing and binding too.  

Now onto the next box.

More patriotic fabrics!

This is what was left of the fabric pull when making my Stars and Stripes Forever quilt.  The plan was to keep using the fabrics until it was gone.  Maybe a Bonnie hunter scrap quilt in red, white and blues or a simple log cabin quilt.  Later in the day this box sent me on a Google and Pinterest patriotic quilt pattern search.  You can see my Patriotic Pinterest Board I started years ago by clicking here.

But before wasting a couple hours looking at patriotic quilts I thought it  would be a good idea to straighten up the mess in this box.

It didn't take me long to realize, I really don't want to sort fabric today.  This isn't fun at all!

So I the little sorting I dud was neatly placed back in the box.

Both boxes will be going back in the cabinet.  You see, I have a procrastination problem.  There's other messes to tend to in the Studio and a quilt needing to be quilted in the background of the picture below.

Sigh...priorities and goals.  Had I stuck to this type of thinking years ago I wouldn't be in this situation now.  So I better stick to the list of goals and priorities. Yes, I'm pouting and stomping like a 9 yr. old little girl that has been told to stay in his room until it's clean.

~ Customer Quilt ~ Patriotic Picnic ~

~ Happy Little Things ~ Giveaway! ~

Jacquelynne's version of this quilt could be used as a lap quilt or wall hanging.  It can be done as applique, embroidery only in the center block or just a plain pieced block.  Fussy cutting your fabric fabric for the center of the blocks would also be super cute.

 Each year as featured bloggers of Jacquelynne's block of the month we are encouraged to make the quilt our own.  This is my 3rd year as a featured blogger.  I try to do something a little different each year.  You can see my versions of the last 2 years here and here.

My plan for this year was to make a two color quilt, red and white.  Sometimes a plan looks better in our minds than in reality.  But failure is not an option, starting over is also not an option.  So I had to find a way to make my very busy blocks work together or at least get along.  It's just like dealing with a 2 year old child throwing a temper tantrum.  Distraction.  Wave a cookie in his face and BAM...tantrum gone!  The same works for a quilt.  Find something to pull they eye away from the busy blocks.  I tossed around many ideas and I mean that literally.  Fabric was everywhere.  Creativity is a messy process.  After many hours of design changes  and fabric tossing the quilt morphed from an eye sore to a patriotic beauty.  

I was going to stop with the blue border but decided to take a chance on a scrappy border using the leftovers from the red fat quarters used in the blocks.  I love how it completes the scrappy look.

I think she is going to make a nice addition to my ever growing patriotic quilt collection.  The image below is only part of them.

~ Stars and Stripes Forever ~

Over the years I've had many requests for quilt patterns of quilts I've designed and made.  So this year it's time to finally fill some of those requests.  The first of the requested  patterns was Bluebirds and Blossoms, you can find it here.  Stars and Stripes Forever is next and now available in my Etsy shop.

Stars and Stripes Forever is a throw sized quilt pattern that is the perfect size for Quilts of Valor.  The 69 x 79 finished quilt would also be a great little quilt to take along on a summer picnic or backyard barbecue.   And how jealous would the neighbors be to see this tossed over your comfy rocking chair or porch swing?

 I designed this quilt after seeing a beautiful quilt that was much more advanced.  You can read more about the inspiration quilt here.

My quilt is scrappy, made from fat quarters and fat 8ths.  But this could easily be made from 100% scraps from your scrap bins.  Most of the fabrics in Stars and Stripes Forever are from Wal-mart, Joann's and our local discount quilt shop that has gone out of business.  You can read more about my fabric choices here.

Since I like to break the quilting rules I chose to  use two different methods of applique in my quilt.  The stars are raw edge fused applique using Heat N Bond Lite and Superior MicroQuilter 100wt Thread.

The wave in the border is a more traditional applique that does not have raw edges.  It was stitched in place using Superior Thread Mono-poly Clear thread.  This thread is amazing!  Once the quilt is washed you can't tell the wave has been machine stitched in place.
