It's been a long time since I shared a finished quilt. There's been a lot going on in the Studio but not much that I can share right now.  Here's a sneak peek at my current project using a Lecien Flower Sugar Fat Quarter bundle from Cottage Couture Fabric shop.    

This bundle makes my little ole heart go pitter-pat. It has everything I love gingham, dots, florals and scallops.

The florals remind so much of Pam Kitty fabric....sigh...GORGEOUS!

Hopefully there will be enough leftover from the fat quarters to make a scrappy binding.  If not I'll make a pillow from the scraps and use the background fabric for the binding.

~ Block One ~ Save the Bees ~ GIVEAWAY

As soon as I heard the theme of this years BOM I knew it was for me.  My husband is a beekeeper and I've said for years a bee quilt was on my bucket list of quilts to make.

Instead of  making the blocks into a quilt I decided to use the blocks to make wall hangings for the studio.  

In true Lea Anne style these blocks will be made with Lakehouse Drygoods fabrics.  Over the years I've collected a fairly large stash of the discontinued fabrics.  In the block 1 pattern it called for adding stitches to each petal.  By fussy cutting the hearts on the outer petals and the stripes on the inner petals I gave the petals the whimsical look without doing any stitching.   

In order to get my hearts to fit inside each petal the patter had to be altered just a tiny bit.  The image below shows how I made two templates from the original pattern.  The templates were made from 3 layers of freezer paper.  For more information about how to make freezer paper templates CLICK HERE

Normally I would use the freezer paper templates for turned edge applique.  But these blocks will be made using raw edge applique so the templates made tracing onto Heat N Bond Lite a little bit easier.  They also were used to trace the shape around the hearts before cutting them out of the fabric.

In the original pattern all the petals are not uniform.  So my flower head ended up a little larger than the pattern.  It's not noticeable until I layer the pattern on top of my block.  Below shows the difference in size.

For the half square triangles in the border of the block I decided to use some scrap flippy corners left over from another quilt.  You can see the quilt here.  The blue basket sets beside my sewing machine.  When making a quilt with Flippy corners I sew an extra diagonal line to make a bonus HST.  No scraps!  See how to make the bonus HST's here. 

They needed a little trimming down. 

A true quarter inch binding was made for the the binding.  I like the look of a smaller binding on a small quilt.  However I did have a bit of trouble getting it to the right size.  You can read about it here and download an print a free double fold binding chart.

The backing fabric is a scrap from a previous project.  

I love how this little wall hanging turned out using nothing but scraps! OOPS...the background fabric was a new fat quarter.

Another alteration to the pattern was using a striped fabric for the Bee body instead of  the little bitty applique or stitching the stripes.

All machine stitching, no hand work at all except for sewing the binding to the back of the quilt.

I think the whimsical flower is my favorite part of this block.

Quilt till you wilt ~ Giveaway winners #2 ~

The holiday season is in full swing and that means quilters around the world are frantically adding the final touches to last minute Christmas projects.  I'm one of those that waits until the last minute to make Christmas projects.   However mine are not Christmas gifts.  These are to be used before Christmas.  So I'm working on them day and night while the laundry and dust keeps piling up.  

One would think  since I probably have hundreds (possibly thousands) of yards of fabric in my studio I would be able to come up with three quilt backings and bindings without needing to shop.  WRONG!  Luckily we have a great new little quilt shop that is close by and I can usually find what I need at wonderful prices.  And things I didn't need, like the striped fabric I searched for at home and couldn't find, so I bought more.  When I got home and started cleaning the studio I found it!  Oh well you can never have to much fabric.   All the fabric I purchased is name brand, quilt shop quality but purchased at almost half the price of other quilt shops.  How does she do it? Such great prices.  I know her secret but since it's a secret I can't tell!  If you're ever in Trafalgar, Indiana you gotta stop by Coffee Cup Quilting and say hello to Claranna, the coffee pots always on!  This shop caters to the thrifty everyday quilter by offering these lower prices on fabric and longarm quilting  at  reasonable prices.  If your new to quilting,  would like to learn something new or just like sewing with friends she has some really great new quilting programs planned for 2018.  

So with my new fabric purchases I'm able to get these 3 quilts finished this week.  Hopefully I can ship them by Friday, no later than Saturday....and if life gets in the way Monday.  The quilt you see on the frame and the one on the wall are finished and needing binding.  The one laying across the frame is going to be quilted today.  Just simple quilting enough to keep it together, kids don't appreciate fancy stitches.

~ Block 2, I Love Home BOM and GIVEAWAY

Happy Monday cute quilting friends!  I'm so excited to be sharing block 2 in the I Love Home BOM designed by Jacquelynne Steves.  

 For my blocks I chose to do freezer paper applique and invisible machine applique instead of the fusible raw edge applique.  Most of my fabric selection came from my stash of Pam Kitty by Lakehouse Fabrics.  There's a couple designer fabrics thrown in the mix also because Pam Kitty plays well with so many different fabrics.  

I'm using Monopoly thread by Superior to stitch my applique in place, it's invisible and very durable.  This thread holds up well to an iron and the heat from a dryer.  I've tested it at higher levels of heat than suggested and it doesn't melt.  This block was ironed after finishing using a cotton setting and the thread held up fine.  It comes in two colors clear and smoke for darker fabrics.  I'm using the clear thread with a teeny weeny little blanket stitch.  How tiny?  The picture below shows the thread and the tiny stitch.   Using a 70/10 needle also helps to hide the stitching.  

The Monopoly thread is barely visible.  Once the quilt is washed, it almost disappears completely, giving your quilt the look of hand applique without all the work.

The window sashing and the heart above the door were sewn using Aurifil thread and a double machine stitch.  

 Awe...my design wall is looking SEW cute!  Can't wait to share the rest of the quilt with you...I've a surprise finish!

Podunk Pickin's #12

Hey quilting buddies!  Thanks for stopping by for another week of Podunk Pickin's. This will be a quick post, today I've chicken broth to can in the pressure cooker and then hopefully a little sewing time.   It seems I'm only in the Studio long enough to make a mess these days.  So earlier in the week I was trying to organize and straighten up the mess.  Remember all the pinks squares I cut?  If not you can see them here.  And an iffy pattern tutorial for them here.  They were still everywhere due to my lack of design boards to put them on.  So I needed a way to keep the organized in the nice little sorted stacks.  Here is my solution.

 Good ole cheap adding machine paper  that can still be purchased at Wal-Mart.  I use the tape a lot when designing quilt border quilting. Here's a tutorial for using it when marking the dreaded crosshatching. 

My little stacks can be left separate, in order and neatly tucked away until I need them. 

Wouldn't you know it, as soon as I cleaned  up that mess, I made another.  So much to do and so little time.  One of the things on the to-do list is finish my design boards.   Another tip!  If you use cardboard for making design boards you can sew on the binding with a heavy duty jean needle.  I used the cardboard box that Mr. Podunk's new recliner was delivered in.  Good use for an old rotary cutting blade.
