Lining up sashings

In the rush to make this quilt a quicky I forgot the very important step of lining up the sashing strips.   I've marked the error in the picture below as if it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.  As obvious as it is, it's staying as is.  I did take the time to line up sahings in the rest of the quilt.

I've tried eyeballing this process, and "feeling" the seams until they "feel" like they line up.  It never works for me.  It only takes a few extra minutes to mark each sashing strip in the seam allowance.

Line up the sashing of the next row and pin.

Now that looks better and it only took a minute.

  1. Oh thanks! That's so easy to do and makes all the difference! It's why I use corner stones-lol. Now I won't have to!

  3. Great tip and I agree sometimes just feeling doesn't get it done. I started marking the quarter inch on my corners when I am sewing down the binding and my corners are much better now.

  4. Great minds think alike. It works great especially for wonky crosses.

  5. Thank you so much for this tip. I did not even think of that. I always just pinned start on the edges and then through the center hoping that when I was done that the sashing lined up. Thank you for the cool tip!!

  7. One trick I've used is to put pins right at the seam between the block and the sashing, with the pin head right at the seam and the sharp part of the pin right at the edge of the horizontal sashing strip. Then when I add the next row, I just have to feel for pins and line those up with the sashing in the next row and pin. You flip the strip over and remove the pins before you take it to the sewing machine for stitching.
