What a Week

This week has been full of canning and freezing produce from the garden.  I've not been able to get in quilting time for two days.  Well I did manage to do some cutting of fabric, only to realize that I had cut them all the wrong size.  140 squares that were a half inch too small.  DRATS!  What kick in the quilty mojo.  So when this unexpected package arrived in the mail it was just what I needed to recharge my mojo.  Thanks again to Kris for the sweetest fabrics.

With all the cooking and canning caught up, now I can do some catching up in the Studio.   Last night I cut right amount of squares at just the right size.  It's time to put the pedal to the metal and do some speed piecing!  YIPPEE!    These little vintage cuties will stitch up quite nice with a little vintage 50's and 60's malt shop oldies playing in the Studio.  Right now Earth Angel is playing.  How many of you are fans of the Oldies?  Do you have a favorite blast from the past?  I'd  love to hear what gets you up and doing the Mash Potato or Peppermint Twist!

Remember these?

I've been shuffling these around the studio for quite some time.  It's time to do something with them.  Either finish them or store them away in a drawer.
The block pattern is called Nostalgic Pillows By Lynn Wilder.  You can find a link to the pattern on her blog Sew'n in Wild Oaks.  Just scroll down on her blog and look to the left.

The little ladies are vintage images found on the internet, then printed to fabric.

Originally I'd planned on making the 9 scrappy blocks.  Now I'm thinking I'd like to finish it as quickly as possible.  You know, UFO Busting!  So the afternoon was spent rummaging through the scrap bins and cutting fabric.

The gingham is the perfect fabric for framing these little cuties.

My favorite is this one with the bright pink gingham.

Little Missy

In between life and thunderstorms this Little Missy block came together.  The pattern for the block is called Nostalgic Christmas.  At 18" its works out great for a pillow or a quick quilt.
The pattern calls for a print for the center of the block but I can see a pretty large scale floral also.  Lynn has also made this using her family photos printed on fabric. She suggests using printable fabric sheets that can get be purchased anywhere that sells office supplies.   It's super simple to print out your own images using freezer paper and your own fabric.  If you try this method its best to do a test piece before making a whole quilt.  Some inks set better than others.  Here's a quick run down of how to test your DIY printed piece.
  1. after printing let ink dry for about 20 minutes
  2. heavily press the printed area with a hot iron, careful not to scorch.
  3. in a baking dish or plastic container big enough for your printed fabric pour in about 2 inches of white vinegar.  Then add your print to the vinegar. Do this carefully.  Let stand for at least 20 minutes.
  4. remove from vinegar, do not wring, lay your print on a towel, using another towel to lay on top and lightly press down to absorb some of the vinegar.  At this point you'll be able to tell if some of the ink is going to come off on your towel.  Mine did not.
  5. Carefully rinse in a sink of cold water
  6. again lay flat and blot to remove excess water
  7. air dry
  8. press with iron, the heat helps sets the ink.  Now for the real test to see if the ink is permanent, lightly hand wash in the sink using a mild detergent. If you still have a picture just let it air dry and press once more. (You can buy Bubble Jetset if this method doesn't work with your ink.)
Once you've determined that your ink will stay there's no need to hand wash the  other pieces.  After the vinegar soak and rinse, just air dry and press.
I've collected several little girl and boy vintage images on Pinterest for making this quilt.  Don't you think it would make a sweet baby quilt?  I think 4 blocks with sashing  and a small border would be so adorable!  For a little boy quilt you could use animal, cars, robots the possibilities are endless for this block.
