~ The Ugly Truth ~

In Feburary of this year we started a remodel project on the back part of our home.  A simple job in which the contractors assured us it would take no longer than 2 months.   Well 4 months later and over budget Mr. Podunk fired the contractor, leaving us to complete the project ourselves.  Little by little we've almost completed the remodel. One of the last things to do is move Mr. Podunk den to the newly remodel part of our home and turn his den into my office/photo studio.  Over the last couple of weeks we've been slowing moving everything out and decorating his new pretty new space. Now here's the UGLY after moving his furniture and removing a few pieces of trim.  UGGG....it's going to take awhile to rework so much UGLY.

The room is fairly small  measuring 8 x 10.  I'll need to get creative to make this a multi-functional room.  The vintage sewing machines you see in the middle of the room are one of the things I need to work into the finished room.  The treadle belonged to my Great Aunt on my Dad's side of the family.  And the other cabinet/sewing machine belong to Mr. Podunk's Dad.

This wall is the only wall in the room without a window or door.  Perfect for getting straight on photos of quilts to use in marketing.  I wanted to put bead board or ship lapped on all the walls of this room but we are so over budget and it's the holiday season so once again these 1980's paneled walls will be painted. It sorta looks like ship lapped.

My vision of pretty moldings and trim is now out of the question also.  The old trim will be updated with a new coat of paint.  I think by now your starting to see a trend......PAINT IT ALL!  Everything but the floor.  The old carpet will be ripped out.

A friend of ours had several boxes of this wood flooring leftover and graciously gave them to us!  Thank goodness, I was beginning to think the floor would be painted also...LOL!

Do you ever wonder what the heck people were thinking back in the 60's and 70's.  You had to be high on something to think textured ceilings was a good idea.  "Hey Baby let's make this ceiling a pain to maintain!  Groovy Baby!  We can look at it while we trip on Acid in our waterbed...Farout!"  I'm pretty sure these textured ceilings were in many tales of bad Acid trips.

The best part about older homes are these small closets.  They are a test in your contortion skills.  If you have been thinking about taking a yoga class and your not sure if you want to commit to paying for a full 6 months or a year, just paint a tiny closet.  It will tell you all you need to know about your flexibility and weather or not you want to do yoga all the time.  A word of caution.......Cover your hair with a hankie or scarf unless you just want your hair to be the same color as your closet.

The closet has its first coat of paint and I'm rolling through the walls as quick as I can.

Then my yoga muscles told me to call it day.  Hopefully I can spend at least a couple hours each day working on my new office space.  I'd like to have it ready to use by the new year.

I guess I should put on my Yoga pants and get busy, I'll see you all later!

  1. Light at the end of a long, expensive tunnel in sight, though with some modifications. So many have experienced such happenings by those who "have promised".....sigh..... We, too, live with much painted paneling (replacement cost being the immediate reason). The "popcorn" ceilings and "dropped" ceilings were the cheapest method of taking care of a ceiling treatment either in a new build or remodel. The home I grew up in (St. Paul,MN....post-war) was filled with rooms sporting not only ceilings but some moderately textured walls. That was the trend, along with "Harvest Gold" and "Avocado Green" appliances/fixtures. The best to you....take your vitamins and "this, too, shall pass".....hugs.....

  3. You will need a bath with Dr. Teal (epson salt) i'm sure for all them yoga moves-stretched muscles :) We had our house built in 1989, and though it has been updated about 3 times we still have our lovely popcorn ceilings that need scraping and texturing and painting...it might wait till I retire if i can tolerate it till then. Good luck as you continuing making this space yours...

  4. Texture and popcorn ceilings are a "cheap" way to hide spackling jobs that were not perfect. . .they cover up all the seams.

Keep up the good work on your space. I look forward to seeing the "after" pictures.

  5. I understand your frustration with your contractor. I went thru the same thing this spring and summer. A 2 week job ran into 4 months and was NOT done well or at original cost. Just makes you want to cry. I hope all works out for you and you can enjoy your new space.

  7. Omgosh this whole post was LOL funny! Why you ask? Because I am 60 years old living in a house built in 1964, the first actual neighborhood in my small town in Northern California. When I was a child, people aspired to buy these houses. It is still considered a fairly desirable neighborhood though the people who keep up their yards are becoming more rare (we are one of them). The closet in the master bedroom is so small, like the one you painted. The other 3 bedrooms have the bigger double folding door kind. We raised our 3 daughters in this house (moved in when the older girls were 6&8 and I was 10 days away from due date with our 3rd daughter). We have textured ceilings that we don't even consider replacing! My husband will not "let" me paint. He is a perfectionist and he has done a lot! He even did 18 inch squares of 5 colors of green in my youngest daughter's bedroom (she moved into a larger bedroom when her sisters left home). Not one of the squares touched a color the same. People were so wowed by that. We finally painted over it about 4 years ago (she had two children of her own by then) and our daughter was so upset! haha. She and her husband just bought a house and they have been doing SO MUCH WORK to their new house. I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore, just that I really enjoyed this post!
