Coriander Quilts ~ Flag Block

It's amazing how one little scrappy flag block can make me so happy!  Sure it takes a long time to cut up scraps but the result is so darn cute.

Corey suggested we use white on white for the side pieces shown below.  White on white isn't in my stash and I didn't want plain ole white fabric in its place.  The flag doesn't stand out as well but I think it still looks like a flag block.

Here's the real dilemma.  Do I make more or make this into a small project?  The quilty soul screams more since the box of red, white and blues is over flowing.  There's plenty of chores to be done around Podunk before quilty playtime can start today.  Working will allow me time to think about how to proceed.   Me, myself and I have already been discussing the options.  This trio can be unbearable at times and then other times they come up with some really good ideas.

If you would like to make your own scrappy flag blocks the FREE pattern can be found over at Coriander Quilts along with three other scrappy quilt blocks.

Until next time...

I hope you find time to stitch up something sweet!

American Flag Quilt ~ FREE QUILT PATTERN

Howdy Sweet Quilting Friends!  Today's share is my version of  "American Flag Quilt" Designed by Lauren of Brights on White Blog.  I found the video tutorial over the Memorial Day weekend while doing a random search for quick quilt patterns.

The video tutorial calls for 12 blocks with sashing and borders of the same width. Making a nice size throw quilt.

Since I wanted a quilt to use on a queen bed I added 8 blocks and a wider border.   My finished quilt measures 93" x 94".  Perfect if I add a few pillows to the ensemble.

Lauren was gracious enough to allow me to borrow a  picture from her blog and share my addition/changes to her quilt pattern.  The video tutorial with the block and sashing measurements can be found here (Link was removed because it no longer works)
The chart below shows alterations to the pattern.  It's color coded to highlight the alterations.  Example: Added 8 blocks is in red so I've added a red frame around the 8 extra blocks.

In the picture above I forgot to mention the binding.  My quilt takes (10) 2.5" x WOF Strips to make the binding.  This was one of the rare occasions I sewed my binding completely by machine.

For the backing I used (8) yards of fabric.  If you look closely you can see one of the seams on the back.

This was such a fun and quick pattern.  The large blocks are perfect for precuts or scraps.  The pulling and cutting of scraps started around Saturday noon. Monday was family day, so I didn't do any sewing.  By Wednesday 3 pm it was quilted and bound.  That's one quick quilt!

The photo shoot for this quilt was just as much fun as making the quilt.   Wallace Farms is such a lovely property.  Thanks Debbie for allowing me to use your beautiful farm.

~ A Quicky Quilt ~ Free Quilt Block ~

Hi! Quilting Friends!  The last few months have been full of work, work, work.  To be honest I get tired of work...who doesn't.  While I love designing new quilts, the writing of patterns takes away from my real love....making them!  So this past Saturday I decided to take a day off from the work part and just throw together something that someone else designed.  Something that wouldn't require a lot of time.  When I found this video tutorial it was apparent this quilt fit my needs.  The large 18.5 x 14.5 blocks have 8 pieces in them so you can make a big quilt quick.  Here's a link to the video tutorial I used.

The tutorial called for less blocks and a different sashing layout.  If  I can get permission from the designer I'll share my measurement adjustments when the quilt is finished. (Friday)

The cutting for this quilt started on Saturday around noon.   By Sunday around 1pm I had a completed quilt top!  WOOHOO!  That's quick!  No cooking, no cleaning, and I kinda threw hygiene out the window.  A quick brush of my teeth and I was ready to power sew in my jammies.

My hopes was to have it finished, quilted and bound by midnight Sunday.  After all the power sewing I pooped out after a few technical difficulties with my quilting.  But I'm back on track and things are progressing quickly again.  What a fun challenge and change of pace.  Do you ever push yourself just to see if you can do it?

See you soon with the finish!
