Something to Crow About

Good Monday Morning quilty Buddies!  This weekend was a very productive quilty marathon.  After cutting 1652 pink squares, ( you can read about it here. ) I needed a little sit down time.  The pink quilt still isn't ready for the sewing machine so a quick dig through the UFO bin....and look what was found hiding way down in the bottom.  What a wonderful surprise!  These blocks had been totally forgotten.  How did this happen?  The star blocks were done and the green chain blocks were about halfway done.   It didn't take long to finish piecing the blocks.  Maybe I need more UFO's laying around for that instant quilty fix!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the prints!  The orange and navy blue are both from the vintage stash.  That orange is just sweeter than pumpkin pie!(you must say that using your very best Steel Magnolia southern draw)  They just don't make'em like this anymore.  Calico's....simple and sweet, reminds me of being a little girl and Momma making most of my cloths.  Calico shirts and big ole floppy Culottes(coolots).  Momma was doing her best and it was the style, but to a little chubby, redheaded, freckled face girl....Culottes were not groovy.  Funny how the things we disliked as a child are fond memories as an adult.  It would be even better had mom kept the hideous things.

Yep I'm liking this UFO busting.  Maybe I should do this more often....yeah right!  We all say that but we know the real truth.  The likelihood of this staying a UFO is more probable than me finishing it and working on another.  Oh but a girl needs to dream.  While I'm at it I'll dream up a little quilting fairy to help with the mountain of UFO's.  She's a cute little pudgy gal...wearing Culottes!

Alright enough daydreaming, that's the reason why I've so many UFO's in the first place.
The original plan for this quilt was to add some applique.  So what do you think?  Applique or more blocks?

Before I leave let's link up today's post with some very fine blogging gals.  Hop on over, be inspired, join the fun and link up!

  1. The appliqué is cute, if you like appliqué go for it! I wouldn't do it... in fact I have a quilt top where my friend and I had to design a second block just to avoid appliqué.

I'm going to read about your pink squares now. I'm horrified by the number!!!!

  2. I love the applique, but the blocks are great, too. I think UFO's are there to give a quick quilt fix at times. There's nothing like finding half finished forgotten quilts when you need a quick fix. And thanks for the memory of the culottes. And how about Palazzo pants? My mom made me some corduroy ones!

  3. I think I'd do the applique..give it it's own little unique twist!! And makes it a nice fall quilt. But either way would be wonderful..great 'find' in the UFO bin!!

  7. The applique sets it apart and makes it more then a star and 9 patch

  8. Love love love the colors and prints. Chain blocks and stars never fail! I think the applique is beautiful--and unique. But its your UFO :)

  9. Nothing beats a quick-fix UFO to boost your quilting mojo. I'd make the extra blocks (because applique is a 4-letter word in my book), but adding the applique would make it uniquely yours.

  10. I always love your posts! I love the applique in the corner but I'd finish it up with the extra blocks and be done with this UFO.

  11. I think I would just make more blocks and be done. I think it is really pretty as it is!

  12. The applique is really cute, but the blocks are great too. I'd say whatever gets it done is the way to go.

  16. Oh I remember culottes too. but I also remember that the school I went to did not allow you to wear anything that could be construed as "pants." My mom made a lot of my clothes when I was in elementary school and they were full of calicos like yours. The quilt looks fabulous -- I rather like the appliqué. Keep working on it, it's almost a flimsy. But, I heard it call out and say it really wants to be a finished top!

  17. I *love* these blocks in these colors! And you're so good with appliqué, I say go for it! The way you have it in the corner looks adorable. I love a quick finish, they're just so satisfying! Thanks for linking up to MCM!

  21. I am glad that you shared your memories and this beautiful UFO. To applique or not, I am not sure....I love applique but the way that these fabrics work so spectacularly together, I am not sure. Being that it is a UFO, I think I would be more likely to just add a few blocks and get it all set up to quilt. How are things going health wise and mentally for everyone? I will continue to keep you all in my prayers. Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful creative day!

  22. My first thought was to make the quilt with just the pieced blocks, but when I scrolled down and saw your cute appliqué idea, I changed my mind. You do such good appliqué (and piecing!) that it would make for a really neat quilt. Either way, though, It will be wonderful.

  23. Love the applique design but the quilt is also really pretty without it. The applique is just a fun surprise.

  24. I like the appliqué . I love all the colors, too. It's funny how certain colors and patterns call up particular memories for us.
