~ Podunk Plaid ~ Friday Finish ~

Hey Happy Quilters!  It's so nice to have a Friday Finish.  This will be my last fall/autumn quilt for the year.  Say Hello to Podunk Plaid.

Finishing at 63" x 72", she is the sweetest little thing.  The idea for this quilt came from a scrap pile of Autumn Love Fabrics  used in two recent quilts.  While doing the quilt math I realized the scraps were not going to be enough even though the pattern uses mostly Fat 8's.  So what the heck...order some more!  Once the fabric arrived this little gal came together in a flash.  Strip piecing is one of the best quilting tricks ever, don't you think?

A quick dig through the stash produced the perfect Riley Blake Yellow dot fabric for the backing.  Not sure when or where it was purchased but I'm sure glad it was in there.

Another quilt that is out of my color comfort zone.  ORANGE!  Who would have thought I could love orange so much.  It could be that Aqua border causing the swoon feeling. 

After completing the quilt, I started wondering how it would look in my favorite RED.  Oh.... now isn't this just darling?  My little grand daughter would look so cute curled up in this on Christmas Eve.

And since Halloween is just around the corner.  It really does look great in so many different colors.

~ One more for fall ~

Howdy Happy Quilters!  A couple of weeks ago while looking at my cutting table full of scraps from several different fall quilts I came up with a quilt plan to use those scraps.  After doing the quilt math it became clear more fabric was needed.  With a few clicks of the mouse the fabric was on it's way.  When it arrived there was a sweet little surprise attached.  How cute are these little buttons!?   I've ordered from Simply Love fabrics several times over the last couple of years.  It's one of my favorite Etsy shops because they put together adorable fat quarter bundles and have sales often.  Browsing the sale bin for end of bolt fabrics is one of my favorite things to do while taking a break.   

The original quilt plan was to use plain ole creamy white for the background fabric.  Until this darling calico peeked out of the stash cabinet.  The selvage is lacking the normal information, all it has is the color dots.  But I do remember where it was purchased, Coffee Cup Quilting in Trafalgar, Indiana.  So if you live close by and want a sweet little calico pop into Coffee Cup Quilting and tell them "Podunk sent me!". 

Another quick quilt, out of my color comfort zone, and I love it!   When I say quick I mean quick.  The cutting began 6 days ago,I took one day off for shopping and chores.  It will come off the frame today, the binding is cut, sewn together and ready to be added.  It doesn't get much quicker than that!  See you when it's done!

~ Bumpkin Pumpkins ~

It's here! It's here! It's here!  Fall is here!  The cooler temps are SOOOO wonderful!  This change has sparked something inside me to work out of my color comfort zone.  My latest quilt Bumpkin Pumpkins is not my normal happy bright quilt.  

Grays and blacks have long been off my list of workable colors.  And to be honest orange rarely sees a rotary cutter in my studio.  This might be my favorite quilt this year....how odd is that!?

Change is a good thing, it keeps things interesting.  Maybe that's just what was needed to start off the holiday season.

If not for the gingham I don't think I would love this quilt as much as I do.  Most of the fabrics in this quilt are Lori Holt fabrics from her Autumn Love and Bee Basics lines.  The Black Gingham was hard to find.  I couldn't find any online so I went to Joann's and purchased an entire bolt.   One week later I stumbled upon a quilt shop on Etsy with a nice black gingham.  If your interested you can find it here.  And one at Fat Quarter Shop, click here.

One of the original ideas for this quilt is this striking black and white version.  Isn't just elegant?!

Then I thought about purple.  Well my friends.....I still can't bring myself to work with purple.  But it does take on kinda spooky feel with purple.

~ The Inspiration ~

I'm often asked what inspires my quilt patterns.  That's a hard question to answer because most of the time it's a collection of ideas stored in my brain over time until I feel the need to put them all together into a quilt.  With this quilt I had an idea that was growing but needed a little something more.  Before continuing with my inspiration for this quilt let me say ....it's hard to believe I'm actually enjoying these colors.  Orange, black, gray and purple rarely find their way into my quilts. So let me tell you how this happened.  SHOPPING!  Yes, a shopping trip inspired these colors.  All I need to say is Hobby Lobby and you all will totally understand.  

Normally I steer clear of Hobby Lobby, it's just too tempting to buy, buy, buy.  Not just fabric...EVERYTHING!  What a sensory overload...I want it all!  Cute little this and cute little that,but the thing that really caught my eye was the black and white gingham mixed in with the fall decor.  OMG!  You all know I'm a sucker for gingham.   Well I managed to get out of the store without buying a thing but went immediately to Joann Fabrics for some black gingham.  While the inspiration was hot on my brain I went to my computer and started designing quilts.  Now to find the fabric for these quilts since my stash is lacking blacks, greens and oranges.  No purple...I still can't deal with purple.  The orange polka dots below is my first purchase, it will be the backing for this quilt.

Luckily there's some scraps left over from my Autumn Memories (pictured below) quilt that will work nicely in this quilt design.  

 Hopefully I can have this one ready for a quilt top flimsy Friday post....this Friday.  Hope to see you then!

~ On a Roll ~

 Hi-diddly-O Friends!  For the first time ever working out of my color comfort zone is actually fun.  Whoa...must have something to do with Mercury being in retrograde.  I've no idea what that means, all I know is right now the planet Mercury is doing some weirdo stuff and some say it makes strange things happen.  OOOOO....SPOOKY STUFF!  

Well.... out here in Podunk strange stuff happens everyday.  Spooky?  Sometimes...but that's a story for another day.  We'll stick to the strange stuff today.   Example....yesterday morning while letting the chickens out to roam I noticed this ugly little guy in our raccoon trap.  Opossums aren't real destructive so he was free to leave.   For some odd reason he decided to nap in the cage all day.  When hubby came home in the evening he quickly gave sleeping beauty his eviction notice and sent him on his way.  Never seen a critter that wanted to be caged....strange.   It wouldn't surprise one bit if he comes back tonight...I'll keep you posted.

For now I'm back in the Studio stitching my little nine patches....and craving a Pumpkin roll.  This strange craving has nothing to do with Mercury and everything to do with orange fabric.  Orange fabric = pumpkins  in my mind.  And pumpkins = PUMPKIN ROLLS!  YUM!  

Have you ever made a Pumpkin roll?  This is one of the desserts the family insists I make every Thanksgiving.    You could smear cream cheese on cardboard and it would be delicious!  I wanted to share the recipe with you but was too lazy to go digging for it.  Well, I found the same recipe online with a quick google search.  And the plus was this gal is also a crafter/quilter/chef.   The picture and recipe below is courtesy of Adrianne of HappyHourProjects.com

She has several awesome sewing projects that you can find here.  But the one I thought was super cute and on my list of must makes is this cute little bandanna pumpkin.  It's a no sew project, perfect for a quicky seasonal decor project.   I'm pretty sure Walmart and the Dollar General have orange bandannas.   My laziness paid off this time!  Hmm...maybe Mercury is working it's weirdness after all....SPOOKY!

~ Autumn Memories ~ Autumn Love ~

Howdy Sweet Quilting Friends!  While summer is in full swing I can't help but long for the cooler days of Autumn.  The farmers around us are bailing hay and the corn in the fields is starting to show the first signs of drying.  It won't be long until we're roasting marshmallows and gearing up for the end of the year holiday parade.  This year I'm trying to stay a step of ahead of the holiday rush.  When I saw the new line of fabric Autumn Love  by Riley Blake the quilty wheels started turning. Thank you Riley Blake for allowing me to work with new line!

 My newest quilt pattern Autumn Memories.

 Autumn Memories was so much fun to make and just as fun to photograph.  She measures about 61 x 71, the perfect size to take along on hay ride or to toss over the back of the couch.

As you know, I've a new found love of the little red truck on my quilts. It  could be because until recently I was the owner of an older red truck.  My ole truck was sold last year but we had about 10 years of fond memories together.  The applique was made using Heat N Bond lite and a straight stitch around the edge of the applique to hold in place.  Templates and Applique placement  sheets are included in the pattern.

The star block is a variation of the Rolling Star block that I've named Bailing Hay Block.

The scrappy border and binding is made from the leftovers of the fat quarter bundle and the backing is a Lori Holt Bee Backing and Borders.  You can purchase the Autumn Love Bundle here.  And the Bee Backing here.
