~ The Inspiration ~

I'm often asked what inspires my quilt patterns.  That's a hard question to answer because most of the time it's a collection of ideas stored in my brain over time until I feel the need to put them all together into a quilt.  With this quilt I had an idea that was growing but needed a little something more.  Before continuing with my inspiration for this quilt let me say ....it's hard to believe I'm actually enjoying these colors.  Orange, black, gray and purple rarely find their way into my quilts. So let me tell you how this happened.  SHOPPING!  Yes, a shopping trip inspired these colors.  All I need to say is Hobby Lobby and you all will totally understand.  

Normally I steer clear of Hobby Lobby, it's just too tempting to buy, buy, buy.  Not just fabric...EVERYTHING!  What a sensory overload...I want it all!  Cute little this and cute little that,but the thing that really caught my eye was the black and white gingham mixed in with the fall decor.  OMG!  You all know I'm a sucker for gingham.   Well I managed to get out of the store without buying a thing but went immediately to Joann Fabrics for some black gingham.  While the inspiration was hot on my brain I went to my computer and started designing quilts.  Now to find the fabric for these quilts since my stash is lacking blacks, greens and oranges.  No purple...I still can't deal with purple.  The orange polka dots below is my first purchase, it will be the backing for this quilt.

Luckily there's some scraps left over from my Autumn Memories (pictured below) quilt that will work nicely in this quilt design.  

 Hopefully I can have this one ready for a quilt top flimsy Friday post....this Friday.  Hope to see you then!

Friday Finishes

Back in January I deicided to take a break from quilting on the frame.  Feathers and ruler work require lots planning and marking.  I was sick of it!  Well my quilty groove is back.  Today I feel like quilting every quilt top in my Studio.  I know this feeling will soon pass, but if feels good at the moment.  Here's the little quilt (48x48) I designed a few weeks ago for my new granddaughter.  She was born last Sunday.  It may be a little to fancy and white for a newborn but what the heck.

  

If you look closely you can still see my blue markings.  Most longarm quilting gals can remember their quilting designs without needing to mark, I'm not quite that talented.  

The best thing about feather quilting....THE BACK!  Two quilts in one.

Oh yes there's more quilt finishes.  I'm so glad this one is done and can be shipped far, far away from my studio.  Not one of my favorite quilts or color pallet, but the grandkids will love it.

  

Here's a shot of the back, it's ugly also.

This ugly fabric just keeps multiplying....so I made another quilt.  The backing is just more of the ugly stuff.

A couple of reversible treat bags.  They're identical, I reversed one so you could see the inside fabric.

Everything is washed and ready to ship to the young'ens.

Technicolor Ghost

Back in May I took part in the Henry Glass Desire to Inspire Challenge.  The challenge.... they send you a mystery bundle of fabric and you have 3 weeks to make whatever you like using only the fabrics provided, then post pictures of your creation.   You can see my challenge projects here.  The project and all the leftover fabrics are yours to keep.  My mystery bundle was Toile and Trouble by Shelly Comiskey. With the leftover fabrics and a few solids pulled from my stash I stitched up a very colorful quilt this weekend.  

 Now let me say I was speed piecing so my accuracy on the blocks wasn't my best work.  Since this will be a utility quilt for the grandkids I squared up the blocks the best I could and continued with the pedal to the medal.

I don't think the grandkids will care about accuracy.  But they'll love the busy and bright fabrics.  It'll be perfect for taking along on hayrides.

A few little fussy cut pieces in the sashing.  

 My favorite part of the quilt is the corners.  It looks complicated but with the strips being the same width I pressed the seams in opposite directions so they would nest together nicely with little pinning.   Click here for a tutorial on mitering corners.

There's still more leftover Halloween fabric.  Enough for another small quilt and maybe a couple of treat bags for the kids.
