~ My Talented Family ~

This is a post about my creative and talented family.  Before going any further I want to give you a heads up/WARNING about what you will see in this post.  The WARNING is being made due to the highly PC culture that has taken over our society.   So if you would prefer to NOT see a handmade knife don't read any further.  You have been warned, so please no snarky comments, they will be deleted.

*******
As a family of makers we tend to give gifts that we put our heart and souls into.  This doesn't stop with just me and my quilting.  My entire family loves to make things, from homemade baked goods to rebuilding cars, everyone has a craft.  Most of us dabble in many different hobbies.  Each one of my children is talented in many different form of the arts.  For my birthday this year my two sons worked together to make a knife.  Remember we're talking about a form of art not a usable tool.  It could be used, it's sharp.  Just like in quilting, some are made to be used and some are made to be hung on a wall.  My youngest son has always shown a talent for working with metals.  He originally wanted to be a jeweler.  Here's a piece he did about 10 yrs ago while still in high school.

The two boys also worked together to make my older sons wedding rings.  My DIL also helped with this project.  What an amazing gift to one another.  The rings are not fancy just a simple band made with love.  Does it get any more romantic than that?  Makes a momma tear up knowing how much they love one another.

So who are these amazing people? (Yep, I'm bias)  This is my youngest son Trever(the jeweler and knife maker) and his fiance Heather.  A fun couple that keep me in stitches.  Always joking around and telling funny stories.  Both are dog whispers and are trying to build a relationship with our Khaleesi.  The truth be told I think they should go into animal training.  They both seem to understand animals on a different level than the rest of us.

My oldest son, Derek and his wife Kristi.   As you can tell by the picture they love adventure.  But they too are just overgrown kids that love to have a good time.  They are such a joy to be around.  Not only for the fun times but because it's so obvious they are in love.  These 2 are modern day hippies, full of love and peace.

So when I was given this little box of what looks like tea I knew the contents was not tea.  Of course it would be something homemade.  But were these mischievous boys up to no good?

I was surprised to find this hand crafted little knife.

How cute is this?  Look closely at the shape of the entire knife.  It is half a pair of scissors, how clever!

They even made a little sheath with hand stitching.  There's a story behind the handle.  My oldest son found the piece of cedar while canoeing on the Ohio river last fall.  He was going to burn it that evening at camp.  But when he was cutting up the wood for the fire he saw the beautiful color and design and couldn't stand the thought of throwing it in the fire.  He loved it so much he couldn't even bare to throw out the cedar shavings when carving he handle.  They became filler in the tea box.  The  attention to detail is beautiful.  The little cut out in the handle is a copper inlay.  That copper is his signature.  He is a pipe fitter in a local union.

The copper has also been used to add a little interest on the top of the handle.  It's amazing workmanship.  A one of kind piece.  It makes me proud to know my boys put so much time and effort into such a small gift.  Priceless.

I pulled this image off of Dereks instagram account.  He's working on the knife with the guidance of his younger brother Trever(the knife maker).  I had no idea when he posted this picture that the knife was for me.  Sneaky boys! Some things never change.  I'm a proud momma.   They are good boys, with big hearts and loving spirits.  What more could a momma want?

You thought this would be the end of the story, wrong!  There's another crafty man I would like to give a little shout out to today.....Mr. Podunk!  It is his turn to shine.  You all already know he's a handy guy.  He is also known as Mr. Fixit.  That's a self imposed title.  He says it's what he was born to do, fix things.  And he does a mighty fine job.  So this week I gave him a very simple task of making a quilt ladder. I've been wanting one for years but I'm to cheap to buy one.   Here it is in the early stages of construction.

When I went out to the garage yesterday evening to see how it was going.....TADA!  It's done!  Well his part is done.  I'm the finisher.  Now to decide do I leave it as is or add paint?  I'm not sure. I'll give it a few days before making my decision.

  17. What a beautiful post! That ring is gorgeous, as is the knife. No PC police here! Art is art, period :)

  18. I forgot to add- when my youngest son got married he and his wife made my husband and me rings to commemorate the event. My husband's was yin/yang and mine was a replica of a ring I used to have that my son wears all the time. We've never taken them off.

  19. Wow! That's some serious talent in your entire family. I love seeing what kinds of things people make with their hands and put their heart and soul into it. I know you've got lots of beautiful things to fill it up with. Have you made up your mind yet about stain or paint?

  21. Well, it may be functional, but it is also gorgeous! And, the story is just as wonderful! I especially love the part about saving the cedar piece from the fire. What a lucky Mom you are indeed. Thanks for sharing your talented family!

  22. photo bombed by Khaleesi who knows how to be the center of action. How will you finish the ladder so it's finish is safe to store quilts on? You don't want an unpleasant surprise left on the quilts. Your tribute to your menfolk and their gals was touching. I can feel the love you all share. And whatever medium an artist chooses is second to the fact that they see beauty in the materials. The pic of your hippie son and his wife is gorgeous. Lucky you to have good DIL's who make your family even better. Good boys is right. The workmanship is so well done, love the curves, the fact that he used scissors and the insert. Very nice design and placing it on shavings is brilliant and the little box is too sweet. Yep, good boys.

  23. Really beautiful! I missed having sons, though my first son-in-law is quite handy with woodworking. He makes beautiful cutting boards which are especially special since he is a legally blind former Marine. I guess since all your PC people are not reading this post I guess it's a good time to say my husband loves that knife competition show. He watches it all the time and I admit I like it more than the cooking shows he likes to watch (he loves to cook). I can also announce I have my CCW (in California) after a young man tried to get into my motel room one night when I was traveling alone home from my youngest daughter and that talented son-in-law before he was medically retired from the Marine Corps. I have been planning to ask my DH to make me a quilt ladder so I can show him this post. He is Mr. Handyman too. He covered an entire wall in my sewing room with sound board and white flannel. It's quite nice to have such a big one that holds not only king size quilts, but lots of room to hang other stuff including the quilts for my granddaughters, the rows I have finished (since it is a row by row pattern). I'm enjoying the sun on my oldest daughter's patio with the 4 dogs being lazy after spending yesterday and this morning making big batch cooking. I go home in 3 days and I am looking forward to being back home with my sewing room and my husband, and my familiar kitchen tools!

  24. What a wonderful article on your family. It shows how much your sons love their Mom and it speaks what a great Mom you are. Nice family. That knife is beautiful and it show the craftmanship they have. What a precious treasure. Homemade gifts are just the best. It is a piece of the person that made it with such love and joy. And I love your quilt ladder. Thank you for sharing your family with all of us and taking us in as a part of your world. God Bless and Happy Easter.... Claudia

  25. Beautiful handmade gifts. They can be useful or cherished to become a family heirloom. I guess I've tuned out so much I don't know why a knife-bought or handmade is on the PC list. I use one every day to chop veggies, cut sandwiches in half and I have a nice heavy serrated one for use in my garden. I agree the PC crowd has went overboard on things "they" feel should be outlawed. Our state is being threatened with taxing every plastic grocery bag and now the bags that you put your veggies in. I can see plastic is a bad thing in ways but until they start putting all soda in bottles and recycling them like the old days when I grew up (and milk too) and until they tell mother's to learn to wash and diaper babies the old fashion way I don't think they're serious enough. I know if that happens a lot of females will jump off that PC bandwagon like it's a hotcake because they're not about to give up those disposable diapers. I love the simple golden band. I love diamonds but I forget to put on my gardening gloves and mine gets all gunked up with dirt, etc. I'll never have pretty nails because sometimes I just have to feel the dirt in my hand to really judge things. Keep on creating and sharing ALL the things.

  26. Truly a wonderful, thoughtful gift. My husband makes knives and has made them for our 6 grandchildren. The knife, a sheath and box to keep it in. He made it all. When they turn 9, they get their knife. Even my granddaughter, he stained her box pink. The wood for the handle he made from a piece from the woods they live in. They love them. 2 more to give.. it will be a while one is 6 and the other is 2. Enjoy your wonderful gift.

  27. What beautiful gifts! "Naked wood" would not be a finish of choice for fabrics, it is acidic and will harm your quilt fabrics. A finish that seals it, like paint, would be a better choice for a wood ladder. That way there would be no acid damage, staining of the fabrics, etc.

  28. What a beautiful knife! My son has always admired fancy knives since he was young. I thought he might get into making knives instead of leather goods. My daughter ended up painting on canvas a few years ago and she is really good, so who knew? My mother was an artist and quilter. My brother is great a photographer. My sister makes very artsy cakes and my hubby is a Mr. fixit too! Isn't it great to be part of a talented family? Thanks for sharing your family's talents.

  29. Your son reminds me of my son. They are nature loving, tough guys, but wow do they love there momma's. My son makes the most beautiful furniture, it would make Laura Ashley and Joanna Gains cry. (Of course, that's how I see it). My husband I call "tinker". He tinkers in the garage. Sometimes amazing things come out of there too.
Your proud, and should be. The love your son and husband has for you is beyond any material things this life can give to you.
